Nine out of ten Americans who know someone with Alzheimer’s are concerned that they or someone they know will one day develop Alzheimer’s disease. On Thursday, January 26, 2012 more than 65 leaders used their voice to act on this concern. Volunteers participated in the Alzheimer’s Association East Central Iowa Chapter VOICE the VISION Rally, held at KGAN CBS 2 and KFXA FOX 28 studios in Cedar Rapids and virtually throughout the Alzheimer’s Association East Central Iowa Chapter territory. Callers raised over $20,000 the day of the event and collected pledges that brought the event total to $40,000. The proceeds from the event support the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness, advance critical research, provide care and support, and advocate for those affected by the disease. “We are extremely grateful to KGAN CBS 2 and KFXA FOX 28 for their continued partnership and support of the VOICE the VISION Rally,” said Paige Knebel, Event Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association East Central Iowa Chapter. “The event coverage allows us to educate viewers about the disease and why we need to be concerned. Too many of America’s baby boomers will spend their retirement years either with Alzheimer’s disease or caring [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Mercy Medical Center is pleased to announce it has earned full Chest Pain Center Accreditation with PCI from The Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), an international not-for-profit organization committed to improving timely, quality care for cardiac patients. The PCI designation stands for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention which means not only did Mercy meet the standards of a chest pain center but has also succeeded in meeting additional quality measures and volume of patients that needed to have a stent inserted emergently because of a heart attack. Mercy was the first hospital in Cedar Rapids to earn Chest Pain Center Accreditation, in 2008, and is one of just six hospitals in the state to attain this most recent distinction. To earn the re-accreditation, Mercy had to meet or exceed a wide set of stringent criteria and complete an on-site evaluation with SCPC. Mercy’s re-accreditation means the hospital has achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. ”Earning the Chest Pain Center re-accreditation recognizes Mercy’s commitment to quality, standardized and evidence-based care. While it is an exciting accomplishment to earn re-accreditation, the real beneficiaries are our patients,” [...]

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services just announced that a nonprofit entity in Iowa and Nebraska, Midwest Members Health, known under the Affordable Care Act as a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan (or CO-OP), has received a loan award from the Department of Health and Human Services. More information can be found here: WASHINGTON, DC -The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services today announced that seven Consumer Oriented and Operated Plans (CO-OPs) will receive repayable loans to help them establish private non-profit, consumer-governed health insurance companies. Created by the Affordable Care Act, CO-OP plans will give consumers and small businesses more health insurance choices. CO-OP loans support the creation of new innovative health insurers, which will promote competition and increase choice in the insurance market. As consumer-directed organizations, CO-OPs are designed to be accountable to members and responsive to the specific health care needs of plan members by using profits to lower premiums, improve quality, and expand benefits or enrollment. “We are excited to support the health insurance CO-OPs,” said Marilyn Tavenner, Acting Administrator of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). “CO-OPs will promote competition in the insurance market and respond well to the health care needs [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS – A new Star Wars lunchbox is in 6-year-old John Maloy’s future, but the space enthusiast’s lunchtime excitement Monday centered around a closer-to-home initiative to benefit planet Earth. “Reduce, reuse, recycle,” the Garfield Elementary School kindergartener recited after dropping his milk carton and plastics in recycling bins in the school cafeteria. “It usually goes in the trash,” he said about the items being recycled with the help of Green Iowa AmeriCorps. Monday was a test project of AmeriCorps’ “Garbage Gabbers” program at Garfield, 1201 Maplewood Drive NE. Seven members of Green Iowa AmeriCorps, who promote energy savings through weatherization and environmental education, directed students on where to properly place their recyclables during the school’s lunch hour. The one-day pilot program is an offshoot of the group’s “Trash Talkers” recycling initiative used during Freedom Festival and other area events. “It encourages communication about recycling and how much is going into the garbage that we can divert,” said member Natalie Pappanduros, 23, of Bloomingdale, Ill. Green Iowa AmeriCorps, which started in response to the Floods of 2008, has members in four Eastern Iowa counties who receive a stipend for their service. Milk cartons and plastic containers that held dried fruit [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS — For nearly 20 years, Mike Schrock coped with the challenges of diabetes, but his resolve for change accelerated when his 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with the same disease. “When that day came, it was my worst nightmare,” says Schrock, 34, of Urbana. “Juvenile diabetes is a battle every day that just never stops — a continuous 24-hour, 365-days-a-year battle that doesn’t take a vacation. I didn’t want her to jump over the same hurdles.” Schrock continued to participate in baseball, football and other high school activities after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 15. But he wanted to hide the finger pricks, insulin injections and other daily obstacles from his classmates and knew his daughter, Micheala, now 6, could experience the same. Schrock, who has had eye surgeries related to diabetes and suffered a heart attack at age 30, also knows firsthand the health complications that accompany the disease, a leading cause of amputations, kidney failure and blindness. Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes, happens when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin — through injections, or like Schrock and his [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS- The American Cancer Society is urging Iowa lawmakers to restore money used to fund anti-smoking programs. And that message comes with a warning. The cancer society said less funding to state anti-smoking programs in Iowa, started in 2011, is having a direct impact on more kids starting to smoke. In 2011, Iowa lawmakers cut yearly funding of smoking prevention efforts from $7.8-million dollars to $3.3-million. The cancer society predicts that will mean a 2.3% increase in youth smoking rates or an additional 2,980 teens taking up the tobacco habit in Iowa this year. Cathy Callaway, chairwoman of the Iowa Commission on Tobacco Use and Prevention, delivered those statistics to a legislative subcommittee this week. And eastern Iowans involved in smoking prevention efforts say they can see the impact of less prevention money already this year. At one time, Iowa had a very active statewide youth group that worked to keep younger Iowans from smoking. Just Eliminate Lies, or JEL, organized restaurant “sit-ins” as a protest of smoking sections before the law changed. Youth members also put together “edgy” ads to encourage fellow teens to either quit or not start smoking. But the cuts in prevention [...]

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Today, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the number of hospitals using health information technology (IT) has more than doubled in the last two years. She also announced new data showing nearly 2,000 hospitals and more than 41,000 doctors have received $3.1 billion in incentive payments for ensuring meaningful use of health IT, particularly certified Electronic Health Records (EHR). Secretary Sebelius is in Kansas City, Missouri visiting Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley Health Science Institute to make this announcement and discuss the growth of professional jobs in the health information technology field. “Health IT is the foundation for a truly 21st century health system where we pay for the right care, not just more care,” said Secretary Sebelius. “Health care professionals and hospitals are taking advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to begin using smarter, new technology that improves care and creates the jobs we need for an economy built to last.” Today’s announcement details information from a new survey conducted by the American Hospital Association and reported by the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT which found that the percentage of U.S. hospitals that [...]

Five Iowans are among the victims of a multi-state E.coli outbreak that health officials believe to be linked to eating raw clover sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants. Polly Carver-Kimm, spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Public Health, said all of the Iowa patients have recovered. One of the cases was in Linn County; one in Johnson County; one in Dallas County and two in Polk County, she said. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 12 people have been infected with the outbreak strain in five states. Besides Iowa, those include three people in Missouri, two in Kansas, one in Arkansas and one in Wisconsin. Two people have been hospitalized. Here is more from the CDC: CDC is collaborating with public health officials in multiple states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli serogroup O26 (STEC O26) infections likely linked with eating raw clover sprouts. Public health investigators are using DNA “fingerprints” of E. coli bacteria obtained through diagnostic testing with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, or PFGE, to identify cases of illness that may be part of this outbreak. They are using data from PulseNet, the national [...]

BOSTON – On April 16, John Renning from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be running in the 116th Boston Marathon to help conquer cancer as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. Renning, along with Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across the United States and around the world will run Massachusetts’ historic marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston with a goal to raise $4.8 million for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team members must meet one of the basic fundraising commitments: -Invitational runners, runners who receive an entry from Dana-Farber have a basic fundraising commitment of $4,000. -Own entry runners, runners who have joined the DFMC after obtaining their own race entry have a basic fundraising commitment of $3,500. One-hundred-percent of the funds raised benefit the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber, which funds basic research in its earliest stages, providing scientists with critical resources to test their innovative ideas. Findings from this research can provide novel clinical insights as well as the foundation to seek additional federal funding support. Since its inception in 1990, the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge has raised more than $52 million for the Barr Program. Dana-Farber Trustees [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS – The effects of extreme weather are still evident in Cedar Rapids, nearly four years after flooding devastated the city’s core. A new report released Thursday, Feb. 16, by Environment Iowa warns that severe storms will become more common in the future in Iowa and the rest of the nation. The report, In the Path of the Storm: Global Warming, Extreme Weather, and the Impacts of Weather-Related Disasters in the United States, shows that every county in Iowa was hit by a weather-related disaster at some point between 2006 and 2011. Noticeably absent from an interactive map that accompanies the report are the Floods of 2008 in Linn and Johnson counties. At the time, the flood – which affected 10 square miles of Cedar Rapids and caused at least $2 billion in damages – was considered the fifth worst natural disaster in the nation’s history. Jillian Hertzberg, Environment Iowa Federal Associate, said the report used data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “It has to do with the designation by FEMA,” Hertzberg said. FEMA categorized the flood as a severe storm, which appears as such at the county level of the map. State climatologist Harry Hillaker, said historical data [...]

“Healthy” isn’t always easy to see. It’s easy to tell if a person has good hair or clear skin, but the heart—our most fundamental organ—and cardiovascular system cannot be seen, making it hard to know how healthy we really are. The American Heart Association and University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center have teamed up with Rockwell Collins Recreation Center & Physical Therapy to unravel some of the mystery behind what makes our tickers tick. Together, they’ll host a free health fair from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Rockwell Collins’ Recreation Center at 400 Collins Road N.E. in Cedar Rapids. All are welcome at this community event. “Whether you have existing heart or vascular problems and want to talk to our experts, or if you’re simply curious to see how you can improve your—and your family’s—heart health, this event is for you,” says Phil Horwitz, MD, Interventional Cardiologist with UI Heart and Vascular Center. “Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women, but we want to remind Iowans that heart attacks and strokes are not inevitable—they can be prevented.” The health fair will feature:  Free Screenings: (EKG for first 75 to register, [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS- Iowa is a safe haven state. Right now parents have up to two weeks after a baby’s birth to give up the baby, leaving it at a safe haven… no questions asked. But two state lawmakers want to extend that period. Instead of 14 days, they want to give parents a full year to leave a baby at a healthcare facility without any criminal penalty. Some healthcare providers say there are definite pitfalls to putting a one-year-old in the state’s care or in foster care. But advocates of the new bill say taking the child from its parent could save them from abuse or other harm. Mother of four Rebekah Schnoor adores her two day old daughter, Rynn. “You fall in love all over again. You don’t think you can do that four times,” said Mother of Four Rebekah Schnoor. But some mothers may not feel the same as Schnoor. A new bill could give parents up to one year to decide if they can be parents or if they want to turn them over to a healthcare facility. “Sometimes it takes that long to catch up with you because you realize, “whoa this isn’t something I can [...]

University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center’s heart transplant and heart assist implant program at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics last year achieved the lowest observed inpatient mortality ratio in the nation among its peers ranked by the University HealthSystems Consortium (UHC). UI Heart and Vascular Center ranks first among UHC members participating in UHC’s Clinical Data Base for Heart Transplant and Heart Assist System (VAD) outcomes. The UI Heart and Vascular Center program had the most favorable scores for risk-adjusted mortality performance for heart transplants and implants of heart assist devices for patients discharged between October 2010 and September 2011. Of the 37 cases performed at the UI, there were no deaths. Four other institutions also had no deaths in the past year, but UI Hospitals and Clinics secured the top spot because it had the largest number of cases. “Use of the latest technology and steadfast commitment to patient care is a winning combination. At Iowa we have assembled a team of incredibly smart and dedicated professionals who believe that we can deliver the best care possible. Secretary Sebelius also announced that an estimated 388,735 Iowa residents with Medicare received at least one free preventive benefit in 2011, including the new Annual Wellness Visit, since the health reform law was enacted. Together, this means an estimated 999,735 Iowa residents were helped by health reform’s prevention coverage improvements. The new data were released in two new reports from HHS. “Americans of all ages can now get the preventive services they need, like mammograms and the new Annual Wellness Visit, free of charge, as a result of the new health care law,” Secretary Sebelius said. “With more people taking advantage of these benefits, more lives can be saved, and costly, and often burdensome, diseases can be prevented or caught earlier.” Nationwide, the Affordable Care Act provided approximately 54 million Americans with at least one new free preventive service in 2011 through their [...]

St. Luke’s Hospital recently received two prestigious designations from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA). St. Luke’s has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center and Heart Failure Certified. St. Luke’s is the only Iowa hospital to receive the Heart Failure certification and one of ten hospitals statewide awarded the Primary Stroke Center designation. This is the first year for an enhanced alliance between The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, which was originally formed in 2003, to help organizations provide more comprehensive and appropriate care for patients at Certified Primary Stroke Centers and Heart Failure Programs nationwide. This enhanced alliance combines the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s scientific expertise with The Joint Commission’s 60 years of experience in evaluating the quality and safety of care in healthcare organizations. This alliance was created to better educate patients about hospitals providing the “next generation of stroke or heart failure care.” Benefits of the enhanced alliance include: Patients can easily recognize the hospitals providing state-of-the-art stroke and heart failure care. One destination for sharing stroke and heart failure care information with a clearinghouse of tools and best practices. A coordinated set of support [...]

IOWA CITY- The earlier doctors detect life-threatening health issues, usually the better the chances for a cure. And doctors at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics began applying that theory on Tuesday to all babies just a day or two after delivery. The routine newborn screenings that began on Valentine’s Day will include a test for seven types of heart defects. Those defects appear in about 4,800 births every year in the U.S. The testing is called pulse oximetry and it’s a kind of screening that measures low level of oxygen in the blood. It can be a sign of heart issues in newborns. U-I-H-C always screens babies in intensive care for heart defects, but research suggested every newborn could benefit from early detection. Karla Buchholz of Waterloo came to the University of Iowa to deliver her son because doctors considered her pregnancy high risk. There’s also a history of heart disease in her family. So when nurses explained the U of I wanted to screen all newborns for early signs of heart defects, she volunteered two-day-old Peyton for the very first test of a healthy newborn. “For the little expense of the test, and [...]

Modern Healthcare magazine has announced Terri Christoffersen as its 2012 Trustee of the Year for a Large Hospital. Christoffersen joined the St. Luke’s Hospital board of trustees in 2000, chairing the board from 2005 to 2007 and the governance effectiveness committee from 2008 to 2010. Currently, she is chairwoman of St. Luke’s Health Care Foundation and a trustee of St. Luke’s parent organization, the Iowa Health System, where she chairs the quality committee. She also is an ex-officio trustee at St. Luke’s. According to the publication Christoffersen stated she was most proud of shepherding improvements in the governance structure, emphasizing board, committee and individual accountability for performance. This occurred while she was board chair. “One of the things I find remarkable about her is she just keeps going,” says Ted Townsend, president & CEO of St. Luke’s. “She is always willing to put her shoulder to the wheel.” Christoffersen gained firsthand insight on what it was like to be a family member of a St. Luke’s patient while her late husband battled cancer during the second half of 2005. She shared her concerns about some aspects of her experience with Townsend, who recalls, “She was very insistent that we needed [...]

The following tips are from Life Fitness: If you exercise consistently, you may eventually run into the problem of becoming sick and not knowing if you should continue your workout regimen. Here, Life Fitness shares a few tips to try out. Do a neck-check. The standard to follow is called the ‘neck-check.’ If your symptoms are above the neck, like a runny nose or sore throat, then you’re okay to exercise. Always listen to your body and take the intensity of your workout down a bit if your regular pace feels too strenuous. If you are sick below the neck, take a break from exercise. If you have any symptoms below the neck, such as body aches, chills, stomach problems or diarrhea, take it easy until you are feeling better. If you’re running a fever, no matter what your symptoms are, put off exercising until your temperature returns to normal. You can rev-up exercise when you’re run down. If you’re suffering from congestion or low energy, exercise may help you feel better. A brisk walk can unclog your sinuses better than an afternoon on the couch. And gentle exercise can rev up your circulation to counteract that sluggish, run-down feeling. Don’t [...]

IOWA CITY – A new form of newborn screening at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics could save the lives of babies born with heart defects. Pulse oximetry is a quick, non-invasive way to screen for seven forms of critical congenital heart defects, said Dr. Ben Reinking, a UI pediatric cardiologist. According to the U.S. Centers for Control and Disease Prevention, about 4,800, or 11.6 babies per 10,000, are born annually with one of the seven congenital heart defects covered under the screening. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 14, nurses will place sensors on the hands and feet of newborns to check the amount of oxygen in the blood and the baby’s pulse rate, Reinking said. The method, performed within 24 to 48 hours after birth, does not harm the baby and is an inexpensive way to screen for defects, such as transposition of the great arteries, he said. Low levels of oxygen in the blood can be a sign of one of the disorders. Reinking noted that some heart defects don’t manifest until after a baby is about seven days old and cannot be detected in a typical exam. “That’s when problems develop,” he said. “It goes from looking like a [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS — Sometimes it takes outside help to mend a heart. Members of a Cedar Rapids group have been doing that for 20 years. “You’re just one beat away from eternity,” says Carol Hayek, president of the local chapter of Mended Hearts, whose members — all heart disease survivors — visit hospitalized cardiac patients. “I give them the good word that there’s life after heart disease.” Mended Hearts marks its 20th anniversary this year and is spreading the word during February about American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three Americans has some form of heart disease, such as severe chest pain, heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. Hospital stays have shortened since Hayek, 77, had a heart attack at age 69, but the members’ visiting schedule three days per week generally catches any patient who wants a visit before being discharged. Owner of the Carpet Chalet in Cedar Rapids, Hayek says he had just returned home from church and was planning to do yard work when he suffered a heart attack, with pains in his chest, arms and under his neck. He [...]

UPDATED: 3 p.m. CEDAR RAPIDS — Whether it’s eating 6-inch turkey subs or working out on-campus at Des Moines University, Gov. Terry Branstad is doing his part to lead Iowa on its journey to become the healthiest state in America. “My weight is lower than it was when I took office one year ago,” said Branstad, who announced the 11 Blue Zones finalists Friday in Cedar Rapids. “I try to lead by example.” Supporters of the Cedar Rapids effort to become a Blue Zones community also hope to lead by example, as the city was named one of the finalists under Iowa’s Blue Zones initiative. Joining Cedar Rapids are Ames, Cedar Falls, Clinton, Davenport, Mason City, Muscatine, Ottumwa, Sioux City, Spencer and Waterloo. The cities will compete to be one of the first three or four demonstration sites for the Blue Zones project. The project is a main component of Iowa’s healthiest state initiative, an effort to make Iowa – now 19th – the nation’s healthiest state under the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index by 2016. Site visits begin later this month, with the first round of demonstration sites announced in May. Those communities will receive expert advice to help residents improve [...]
