Members of Dubuque County Right To Life are revealing a new effort to push Planned Parenthood out of that community. The organization has been protesting Planned Parenthood since the clinic opened in 2008. On Wednesday, Rita Diller, Director of the national organization STOP Planned Parenthood explained to members of Dubuque County Right to Life how she’s says she was able to get 19 Texas based Planned Parenthood Clinics to close. Diller said, “The key is persistent activism. The key is building a solid wall of resistance against Planned Parenthood within the community. Meeting them at every corner, because they are in places you wouldn’t even imagine. ” Ellen Markham and Maureen Ward have been fighting Planned Parenthood’s Dubuque presence since day one. “as soon as we found out they were there. In fact, we were there one hour before they opened and began standing out from of their facility. ” The pair schedules the volunteers who stand outside Planned Parenthood each hour the clinic is open for business. Ward said, “our number one issue,of course, is the fact that (some Planned Parenthood clinics) provide abortions and that’s why we are there. ” While some Planned Parenthood Clinics offer abortion services, [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS – An 11th hour intervention by Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett and promise of $300,000 in funding won’t be enough to save a former historic church from demolition. Demolition of the former First Christian Church, 840 Third Ave. SE, is expected to begin next week. Laura Rainey, spokeswoman for St. Luke’s Hospital, which purchased the church as part of the site for the Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa medical pavilion, noted that demolition has already been delayed four months to give people time to submit viable proposals for the property. “No one came forward,” she said Tuesday, and demolition will likely start next week. A preservation group known as Save CR Heritage had raised $45,000, but not the remainder of the $900,000 purchase price and $2 million renovation estimate, Rainey said. “It was a lot of hoped-for funds,” she said. “It really lacked substance.” The city offered to provide about $300,000 toward the cost of renovating the building for offices or other reuse. Those funds could have come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or other sources, Corbett said, and as details were still being worked out, he put the offer on the table. “I’m really sad about it,” [...]

A simple swipe of your cheek can save a life. That’s what employees at East Central Iowa Intergovernmental Association learned on Tuesday. That’s when the Dubuque based transportation organization held a bone marrow drive. Michelle Huseman, a Dubuque bus system manager, counts her blessing everyday. Her 29-year old daughter, Lindsey fought and beat cancer twice. Huseman credits a bone marrow donor for saving Lindsey’s life. Huseman said, “one day he was donating blood and somebody passed around a clip board and he said “sure”. Then several years later he matched Lindsey. ” Fast forward ten years later, Michelle’s co-workers are now swabbing their cheeks. E.C.I.A. Employee Tim Crabb said, “somehow with that simple swab they can figure out who is a match and begin the process and hopefully contact us. ” They hope to be a match for someone else who really needs. The co-workers promise to honor the commitment if they’re a match. Crabb said, “they’ll drill a hole into your hip, into your bone marrow that would be harvested and donated to another person.” It’s a tribute to their co-worker who appreciates each swab and all that tedious paper work. Huseman said, “so far and still counting it’s [...]

Experts say a proliferation of hospital-affiliated primary care and urgent care clinics is part of the future wave of health care. The clinics help provide the access, continuity and integration of care that are hallmarks of health care reform, while at the same time promoting “brand” loyalty to the hospitals, said Scott McIntyre, communications director for the Iowa Hospital Association. “If it’s your clinic, (doctors) will refer patients to your hospital,” McIntyre said. “Health care providing is still a business and there’s still competition.” Hospital-employed doctors have replaced the older model of independent doctors, he said, a model that facilitates communication and connects the primary care doctors to specialists and to hospital care. Clinics aren’t confined to the city where the hospital is located, with some in counties far beyond the flagship site. Julie Zuber, director of clinic operations for St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, said St. Luke’s opens clinics where patient demand exists. The newest is a 20,000 square-foot facility built in the former Floor Trader building, 1001 N. Center Point Rd., Hiawatha. St. Luke’s Hiawatha Campus, which opens May 21, will include internal medicine, urgent care, imaging services, Therapy Plus and Medlabs. “It’s a growing area,” Zuber [...]

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has awarded the University of Iowa Environmental Health Sciences Research Center (EHSRC) a five-year, $7.9 million grant to continue investigating environmental health effects arising from rural and agricultural exposures and serving as a primary environmental health resource. The center, based in the College of Public Health, includes 65 faculty researchers from across five UI colleges: Public Health, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. It has been continuously funded since 1990. “The strength of the center comes from our multidisciplinary approach: bringing scientists together from many different disciplines to tackle the most challenging environmental health issues of our day with highly innovative research,” says Peter Thorne, professor and head of the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health and director of the EHSRC. “This renewed funding will allow investigators to take their earlier research to the next level in critical areas, such as nanomaterials and antibiotic resistant organisms, to determine the risks they pose to human health.” The center’s research focuses on rural populations that face significant, unaddressed environmental health concerns such as asthma, cancer, and neurodegenerative or inflammatory diseases, according to Thorne. In addition, its team has conducted innovative research on the [...]

Delta Dental’s new ‘Dentist by 1’ campaign website provides resources for Iowans JOHNSTON, Iowa (May 14, 2012) – Only eight percent of Iowa children see their family dentist by age 1.1 That’s a staggering fact when it’s recommended that children should go to the dentist within six months of getting their first tooth – and no later than their first birthday.2 “Tooth decay is nearly 100 percent preventable. But to help prevent cavities, it’s important to begin good oral health habits, like visiting the dentist, when children are very young,” said Dr. Ed Schooley, dental director for Delta Dental of Iowa and Foundation board member. By visiting the dentist by age 1, the child and parent establish a relationship with a dentist, which can help set a foundation for good dental health care and habits. Studies show that early preventive dental care like check-ups and cleanings can not only save in future dental treatment costs, but also alleviate the pain and suffering that can result from untreated oral health issues. Through the 2012 “Dentist by 1” public service campaign, the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation hopes to educate Iowa parents about the benefits of taking their [...]

IOWA CITY – A Haitian baby who received surgery at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital for a birth defect is going home Saturday, May 12. Bedica Ermilus was about 14 weeks old when surgeons performed the operation in March for anorectal malformation, a lower digestive tract abnormality. Dr. Christopher Buresh, an emergency physician at UI Hospitals and Clinics, has made dozens of medical trips to Haiti, but Bedica was the first Haitian patient he was able to facilitate treatment for in the United States. His wife, Dr. Ginny Ryan, a UI Hospitals obstetrician-gynecologist, brought Bedica to Iowa City after UI medical volunteers in Haiti diagnosed the condition. Bedica has been recovering from surgery at the couple’s home. She will leave Saturday afternoon from the Quad City International Airport in Moline, Ill., for the return trip to Haiti. Ryan, who will accompany Bedica on the trip, said her final checkup was Tuesday. “Bedica has recovered very well from surgery,” she said, adding that Bedica would be returned to her mother Sunday on Mother’s Day. Ryan will spend about 24 hours in the community with Bedica’s mother and Haitian community health workers, sharing gifts from Iowa City friends, family, church and colleagues [...]

With just weeks left before schools let out for the summer, doctors and safety experts at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital are encouraging a “safety first” approach to outside activities. “When you’re talking about injury prevention for children, probably the biggest thing to keep in mind is supervision,” says Charles Jennissen, M.D., director of pediatric emergency medicine at UI Children’s Hospital. “When things go wrong or when bad things happen, most commonly it occurs during a short period of decreased supervision.” Pam Hoogerwerf, community outreach and injury prevention coordinator at UI Children’s Hospital, agrees. “As kids are getting out of school they’re going to have a lot more outside time,” she says. “The first key for any caretaker — whether it’s an adult, a babysitter, or an older sibling — is to know where that child is and what their surroundings are.” Summer safety comes not only in remembering to wear sunscreen and bicycle helmets, but in being aware of the potential dangers for children playing in the area and in avoiding developing bad habits. Jennissen and Hoogerwerf offer some tips for summer safety: * All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) safety: The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn’t recommend that anyone under the [...]

The following is from Scott McIntyre, Director of Communications for the Iowa Hospital Association: New data from the federal government has reaffirmed that Iowa’s hospitals are among the most cost efficient in the nation. The new Medicare figures show wide variance among hospitals around the country, even within the same city. In Los Angeles, for example, the average patient admitted to Temple Community Hospital cost Medicare $24,104 during the stay and in the month afterward, 34 percent above the national median. Meanwhile, about a mile and a half away at Saint Vincent Medical Center, the cost was $17,628, or 5 percent below the median. Every Iowa hospital included in the data came in below the national median and the level of variance was not nearly as wide in Iowa, where the average Medicare cost ranged from 16 percent to 2 percent below the national median. Iowa hospitals, on average, cost Medicare $16,427, or about 9 percent below median. This ranked Iowa as the 9th most efficient state in the nation. See more of the report here. These have more state data and hospital data.

But when a pregnant woman is addicted to one of those pills, her baby will likely be as well. A study, published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association, shows from 2000 to 2009 the number of infants that has to be weaned off illegal and legal drugs at birth tripled nationwide. The report also found the use of prescription pain medicine in expecting mothers increased fivefold. “It’s just too easy to get,” said Bridget Barnholdt. Barnholdt abused the drug Hydrocodone, a generic form of Vicodin. “One doctor says no and you go to the next.” Her addiction started after a serious car wreck. She went to a family doctor for a check-up after the accident. The doctor gave her Hydrocodone for her back pain. When Barnholdt’s prescription ran out, her dependency on the pills didn’t disappear. “It got to a point where I couldn’t live without it,” she said. The mother of two says she didn’t abuse drugs during her pregnancy, but tells us doctors were always too willing to give her another [...]

St. Luke’s is pleased to announce a partnership with The Carl & Mary Koehler History Center to preserve and identify appropriate recipients for the Louis Millet stained glass windows housed within First Christian Church. Preservationists have confirmed Louis Millet was the art glass designer of the church windows and light fixtures, which maintain significant value apart from the original structure. The Millet windows and light fixtures will be removed from the structure by a professional stained glass window preservationist who will crate and store them. St. Luke’s will keep several windows for its Chapel and for the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center of Iowa. The History Center will add a few examples of the stained glass to its existing collection of First Christian Church materials. This collection currently consists of architectural drawings, a stained glass chandelier, souvenir programs, photographs, annual reports, church directories, and other documents. St. Luke’s will store the remaining pieces for a period of 12 months while The History Center seeks applications to repurpose the windows and light fixtures within public spaces in the Cedar Rapids Corridor. The History Center will announce guidelines and the application process in June. An independent review panel will be formed to evaluate applications. [...]

HIAWATHA – Second-grader Isaac Hofferber plucked a tiny green sprout from a garden growing outside Hiawatha Elementary School. “Here’s a weed,” the 7-year-old said Wednesday, before pointing to a cucumber seedling “and that’s a plant.” Isaac and other Hiawatha students are learning more than plant differentiation with a new Healthy Gardens, Healthy Youth program. Nine raised garden beds are outdoor classrooms where students learning principles of math, science and nutrition. Even artwork and language arts are incorporated into the gardening curriculum. Drawings accompany poems in the school’s hallways, denoting students’ love of apples, oranges, strawberries and watermelon. Jacki Luckstead, youth programs coordinator for Iowa State University Extension, said the project will be evaluated to see if children are more apt to choose fruits and vegetables for lunch after having first-hand experience growing produce. Photos of students’ lunch trays were taken at the beginning of the school year and are being taken again to show what students choose in the lunch line and what they discard. The program carries over to the students’ families, said Julie Bradley, staff coordinator for the program at Hiawatha Elementary. “I have been pleasantly surprised,” she said, citing students who convinced their parents to buy edamame [...]

MARION- Fighting the battle of the bulge must start at school. That’s the recommendation from a new study that reports two-thirds of US adults and one third of kids are either overweight or obese. The Institute of Medicine says schools can combat that growing trend. New USDA dietary guidelines regulate all schools must change their lunch menus with larger portion sizes for vegetables, fruits and grains. But all experts say it comes down to not only what kids are doing at school, but at home. It’s called the new PE and it’s the new craze in the Marion Independent School District. “Any kind of visual stimulation, sensory, that’s what they want and that’s how they learn the best,” said Francis Marion Intermediate Physical Education Teacher Joe Fontenot. Fourth and fifth graders can use this room to play active video games; everything from the Wii, to Dance Dance Revolution, to a climbing wall. It’s all in response to Francis Marion Intermediate’s 30% obesity rate. “If we can reduce those numbers a little each year, that’s what our goal is,” said Fontenot. Schools without this kind of fitness room are still hoping to do their part especially when it comes to lunch. [...]

Most of the state’s whooping cough cases this year have been reported in Eastern Iowa. More than 150 cases have been confirmed in Iowa so far in 2012, an increase of 121 percent over this time last year, but not a record number, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. Scott County has seen the most cases, with 58, followed by Polk County with 22 and Linn County with 14. Fayette and Benton County have both had 10 confirmed cases and Delaware and Black Hawk, both three. Six cases have been reported in Dubuque County and two in Buchanan, Winneshiek and Johnson counties. Also known as pertussis, whooping cough tends to be cyclical in Iowa – with increased activity every three to five years – so health officials said the high numbers are not unexpected. Iowa recorded 1,066 cases in 2004 and 1,106 in 2005. No pertussis-related deaths have been reported this year. Here is more from the Iowa Department of Public Health: According to testing performed by the State Hygienic Laboratory, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) says more than 150 people with pertussis (whooping cough) have been reported so far in 2012. This is a 121 [...]

CEDAR RAPIDS – Indian Creek Nature Center Director Rich Patterson pointed to the bridge outside the center in southeast Cedar Rapids. “If you would’ve been there on June 13, 2008, you would’ve been under water,” Patterson told a group of Cornell College students participating Saturday, May 5, 2012, in a climate change awareness event. Floodwaters reached 12 feet higher that year than they ever had previously, he said, citing one of the ways climate change has become evident in Iowa. Patterson also pointed to poke weed, a southern plant that has become abundant in Iowa in recent years as another way of “connecting the dots” between climate change and real world impacts. State Sen. Rob Hogg, D-Cedar Rapids, organized the local event at the Nature Center and on May’s Island in downtown Cedar Rapids as one of numerous Connect the Dots activities happening worldwide. The day, sponsored by 350.org, draws attention to the effects of global warming and is a call to action, said Hogg, who coordinates Cedar Rapids Climate Advocates. Events also were held Saturday in Iowa City, Decorah, Independence and elsewhere in Iowa. Hogg encouraged members of the Cornell College Environmental Club and other participants to contact Iowa’s [...]

Cedar Rapids, IA, May 4, 2012: Volunteers at the free medical and dental clinics in Cedar Rapids treat over 2200 patients every month and the need continues to grow. Some of our nation’s 47 million uninsured live right here in East Central Iowa. Volunteers at the free clinics see patients who have no health insurance, those living in poverty, the homeless, the working poor, and those who are unable to buy medications needed for their well-being. For the 8th year in a row local doctors and dentists will host the Pills & Drills Charity Golf Event at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Marion. Funds raised through this outing will help continue the important work of the local free medical and dental clinics. Everyone is invited to participate. Items or gift certificates can be donated for a prize drawing, you can sponsor a tee, or register a foursome to play in the event which begins at 1:00 p.m. on May 16th. VIP co-sponsors include Mercy Medical Center, Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa, St. Luke’s Hospital. For Additional Information contact committee volunteers: David Bemus Laura Loveless, LCMS Jason Schmit, D.D.S., LCDS Hugh MacMenamin, M.D. (319) 365-2527, linncountymedicalsociety@infionline.net

American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recognizes and salutes the dedicated nursing professionals who care for critically ill patients and their families. In honor of their efforts, May is designated National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month. This observance is an excellent time to pause to celebrate and recognize the dedication and commitment that critical care team members demonstrate every day to their patients and their patients’ families. American Association of Critical-Care Nurses: Founded in 1969 and based in Aliso Viejo, Calif., the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) is the largest specialty nursing organization in the world. AACN joins together the interests of more than 500,000 acute and critical care nurses and claims more than 235 chapters worldwide. The organization’s vision is to create a healthcare system driven by the needs of patients and their families in which acute and critical care nurses make their optimal contribution. Critical care medicine is the practice of administering immediate and continuous treatment to patients suffering from a life-threatening condition. The conditions, ranging from heart attack, stroke, and severe respiratory insufficiency, to burns and gunshot wounds, can cause serious systemic complications, such as respiratory distress and failure of at least one organ.
